Bespoke & Certified Manual Handling Training

If you’re a company or organisation based in Dundee then you could hugely benefit from our manual handling courses for business, aimed at instructors and employees alike. Manual handling training raises awareness and reduces risks, regardless of the sector or industry you work in.

Manual handling operations should be as safe as reasonably practicable, as poor moving and handling practices can lead to several issues such as musculoskeletal disorders and back pain, which in some cases can even lead to an inability to work. Adhering to HSE regulations, to protect your workforce it’s vital you seek manual handling training courses from a qualified trainer.

My skill as an Osteopath combined with my CPD-accreditation in risk assessment means I am best positioned to create bespoke manual handling courses to suit the specific requirements of your business. Partaking in these courses will not only help reduce sick days and injury for your staff but will enhance the safety of your workplace, thus boosting productivity.

Reduce the risk of manual handling injury by reducing the effort of manual handling tasks.

Data from the HSE says that injuries at work are on the decline but no fewer people are in pain. Manual Handling (MH) practises account for over a third of all workplace injuries. The current teaching is clearly not working. There is no best practise for MH, just as there is no best posture for sitting or standing.  We each have our own individuality and training should reflect this.

My methods will teach you the principles of moving with a load, how to make your movement behaviour more efficient and change your attitude to manual handling risk.

As a registered Osteopath and member of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Occupational Health (ACPOHE), I have expert knowledge in kinematic analysis and anatomy, which is integral to effective manual handling training. Both are statutorily registered institutions and I am bound by the professional standards of both. I also hold a Level 3 Award in Education and Training.

In a nutshell, manual handling injuries are caused when the effort (force) of a task outstrips the resilience of the person to withstand that force at any given time. This can be a one-off injury or an accumulation of repetitive injuries. To reduce this likelihood there are 3 options:

1. Reduce the effort of the task by better ergonomics and task design;

2. Reduce the effort of the task with more efficient movement behaviour;

3. Increase the resilience of the person performing the task.

Number 1 is achieved with good risk assessment and work place modifications.

It is a legal requirement to assess all manual handling tasks and reduce the risk of workplace injury to a minimum.

Allow me to conduct a comprehensive risk assessment of your workplace and working practices. Or train your own in-house assessors:

This one day course will help you:

  • Have the confidence to assess risk in line with HSE best practice.
  • Train up to 8 members of your team to build in-house expertise using the HSE's own MH assessment tools and templates, including the MAC, RAPP and ART tools as well as introducing you to the benefits and restrictions of other widely used options.
  • Learn the real causes of MSDs and how to reduce them.
  • Understand the legal aspects and responsibilities in relation to manual handling.
  • Demonstrate and practice appropriate risk assessment technique.
  • Provide insight as to what the regulator will look for when it comes to the effective risk management of manual handling.

Training is on site at your organisation. Effective training should “be relevant and job specific”, “should be based on observations of current working practices, and should be informed by the views and experience of the workforce” source, HSE.

I am a registered Osteopath, member of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Occupational Health and NEBOSH manual handling Risk Assessor with 20 years experience of treating, managing and reducing musculoskeletal skeletal pain and injury.

Number 2 is achieved with good Manual Handling Training.

Number 3 should be achieved by improving 1 and 2.

The care industry has one of the highest rates of work related pain. Moving and handling of people is a very high risk activity if not performed efficiently to ensure the safety of both carer and the people in their care.

My people Moving and Handling training courses are customised to suit your specific working environment, the Moving and Handling activities you perform and the Moving and Handling equipment that you use.

All courses are held on site at your organisation. Effective training should “be relevant and job specific”, “staff training needs to be customised and professionally delivered, should be based on observations of current working practices, and should be informed by the views and experience of the workforce” source, HSE.

Our Manual Handling Training Courses

Manual handling courses for businesses’ in Dundee can be carried out in offices, factories, warehouses and any other place of work. Injuries and other work-related illnesses are often caused by employers and managers failing to address the health and safety needs of their employees, and them not being aware of the risks involved in their day to day activities. My training in manual handling in Dundee offers transparent information and advice that show which movements cause strains while highlighting different techniques, and showcasing the impact these have on the body. You’ll also be shown clear, easy to follow steps you need to take to reduce the chance of any potential injury.

While your work environment affects your overall health, as a professional, I understand that everyone has different needs, we all have varied postures, we sit differently and the way we walk and stand is completely unique to anyone else. As a specialist, with advanced knowledge and experience, I can cater to all individual employees, treating everyone on a personal basis for the best possible outcome.

Why Consider Training in Manual Handling?

Insufficiency in manual handling training accounts for more than a third of workplace injuries. Minor aches to repetitive workplace strain related injuries, and major skeletal problems, without the correct knowledge of your own working environment, and incorrect techniques in practice long-lasting physical repercussions can occur. These injuries can even affect you for life.

It’s not just the physical limitations and implications you need to worry about either. Periods of sick leave can leave employers with a legal case on their hands, while the employer is left with both pain, and a loss of earnings. My manual handling courses in Dundee cover occupational health sessions which review and assist in the management of neck, shoulder and back problems. The osteopathy sessions are personal, they give you the freedom to gain specific advice related directly to any ailments in question, helping you target the problem head on.
